The belief in the Orixás

The Orixás are Gods responsible for representing nature and also for governing the energies that are present throughout the universe. For the religions that worship them, the Orixás are like the Saints for the Catholic Church, for example, the image of Gods capable of achieving the impossible.

In this way, the religions and cultures that worship and celebrate the Orixás see them in very similar ways. However, they have some distinctions among themselves in the way of celebrating them and also of understanding their powers.

The religions, in Brazil, that worship the Orixás are Candomblé and Umbanda, the best known of African matrix and that base their beliefs on the power of these beings of great strength. Check out more details below!

The Orixás in Umbanda

Umbanda is one of the religions that celebrates and worships the Orixás and in Brazil it appeared in 1908. Since the beginning of its practice, it had a mixture of several traditions and religious beliefs, but mainly the ones with African and indigenous matrix and also part of the spiritist philosophy.

For Umbanda, the main deities to be worshiped are the Orixás, besides having the presence of other spirits, such as caboclos, pretos velhos, gypsies and pomba gira, who are known as guides in the religion and are the representation of figures excluded from society, who follow the mission of guiding people who seek help.

The Orixás in Candomblé

Candomblé is considered the most widely known African religion in the world. Depending on the location where it is practiced, the religion undergoes several changes and this is not only in relation to countries, but also occurs the same from one state to another.

The explanation for the differentiation comes from the fact that the religion expanded, especially in Brazil, after the people who practiced Candomblé were brought as slaves. Due to the lack of contact between these peoples, there was no possibility of a creation of standards. But the point in common for all so far is the faith in the power of the Orixás.

The Orixás in Yoruba tradition

The Yoruba tradition is a set of beliefs that was the origin of Candomblé. The Yoruba came mainly from Nigeria and the religion is based on several legends and worships the Orixás, who for them are considered intermediaries between the superior god called Olorum and humanity.

During the colonial and slavery period, the Yoruba tradition ended up crossing the Atlantic and in this process influenced several other religions. Besides Candomblé, it also had a great impact on Santeria, common in Cuba. One of the most important and fundamental points for the religion is the so-called Ifá System, which is an oracle that determines the actions of the Yoruba.

How the Orixás guide us

The impacts that the Orixàs cause with their actions, characteristics and personalities are shown through their children. The regency, in this case, shows how the Orixà will impact the life of a specific person, but will not be only one responsible for this, because each person has three Orixàs responsible for guiding their paths.

In this way, the Orixás are divided in three ways: firstly, the most known head Orixá, or also the frontal Orixá, and then the adjunct Orixá and the ancestral Orixá. Another important detail regarding this issue is that they will always be opposites.

If your head Orixá is female, the adjunct, for example, will be a male Orixá. The ancestral, on the other hand, is formed by a pair, male and female, which shows the search for balance between the forces. But some beliefs do not adopt this form, thus being only one Orixá. Read more about the three ruling Orixás below!

Head Orixá

The head Orixàs are the ones most people know and therefore they are also the main ones. They will be responsible for showing more about the rationality of the person and they have a strong impact on this question because they are very influential about behavior and actions.

Another point that can be attributed to the Orixás de frente is the fact that they can also cause certain impacts in physical matters for their children, the way they express themselves and how people will notice them.

Adjunct Orixá

The adjunct Orixá, on the other hand, has a connection more with the emotional side. He will represent the action and reaction side of the person influenced by him when facing life situations, both good and bad, from stress to joys, like love. The influence of this Orixá even helps the one in front to be a little more balanced.

Therefore, the adjunct Orixá appears mainly in moments in which the one in front ends up going too far in order to search for balance in the situation. In moments of great stress, danger or challenges, this Orixá manifests itself to calm the spirits and bring a little more tranquility to the actions.

Ancestral orixá

The ancestral Orixás are a little more complex than the others and are therefore seen as the most difficult to identify. This is due to the fact that these Orixás are linked to the person's essence and origin and were attributed to him/her in his/her first incarnation.

Due to this, this Orixá will be the one responsible for representing in fact the truest characteristics of the person. Another important point is that he does not pair with the adjunct and front, but has his own pair: one dominant and one recessive.

How to know your Orixá by consultation

There are several ways to find the Orixás that rule us. As it is something important and that must be respected, it is necessary that you have some essential care and that all knowledge necessary for this is sought in reliable sources before starting the search.

For some people it becomes easier to observe their own characteristics, their way of acting and other details, because they come from the Orixás, who have distinct personalities that are expressed by the people ruled by them.

Thus, the Orixás, especially the one in front, presents itself in these details little by little and having the knowledge about the ways of acting and the characteristics of the Orixás in general, you will begin to realize which one is responsible for guiding you. However, other diverse means can facilitate the conclusion of this understanding. See below!

How to know your Orixá in the shells

The cowrie shells are powerful tools to know who your Orixá is. They are the most common way to conclude this understanding. In general, this kind of consultation is done in Candomblé shrines.

For this reason, it is common that the procedure is done in Candomblé centers by your Pai or Mãe de Santo, because they will have the necessary knowledge to understand and interpret the information that will be shown through the shells.

How to know your Orixá in Umbanda

To know your Orixá in Umbanda, the most I recommend is that you start to attend the terreiros and know more about the religion and its practices. That's because during the process and your constant presence in these places, a Pai or Mãe de Santo will be able to observe your energetic presence and so will be able to understand who is your Orixá.

But for this process to be successful, it is necessary that the person is open to know him/herself more deeply and seek for spiritual strengthening. Only then the Pai or Mãe de Santo will be able to understand and show with precision the head Orixá of this person.

How to know your Orixá in Candomblé

In Candomblé, as in Umbanda, it is necessary to have a greater immersion of the person in the belief and that he understands more deeply the aspects of the religion to find his head Orixá.

In the same way, the Mother or Father of saint can see through the shells. But due to the lack of understanding and approximation with the religion, the game can show only the Orixá that is in front of you at the moment you are made, but not necessarily that one is your Father or Mother. That is why it is indicated to seek proximity with the fundamentals and other important points of the religion.

How to know your Orixà by day of the week

Knowing the Orixás requires a greater depth and certain dedication, as pointed out. If you now have in mind which is your head Orixá, but want to understand a little more about what it means, the deeper influences and ways to thank for the way it has been guiding you, there are days dedicated to that.

Each Orixá has a specific day in Umbanda and Candomblé throughout the week. Therefore this can be a good day to give thanks, worship and enjoy being able to dedicate your attention to your head Orixá.

On that specific day you can dedicate your time to light candles and perform works, such as offerings, which will be delivered and dedicated to the Orixás that guide and protect you along your path. See below what are the days of each Orixá and know a little more!

Monday is the day of Exu, Pomba-gira, Obaluayê, Omulu, Pretos Velhos and afflicted souls. In these moments, those who are governed by Exu, can take a moment to thank and show their gratitude to the messenger of the Orixás.

Wednesday is the Feast of Iansã, the lady of the lightning. People ruled by this Orixá are passionate and like to enjoy life that way. This is a good day to offer Iansã gifts as a form of gratitude for her actions in the lives of her children.

She is commemorated on Wednesdays because of her relationship with Xangô, as Saturday can also be considered as a day of Yansã. Therefore, Wednesdays are commemorated with Yansã, Xangô and Obá.

On these days the children of Oxalá can offer offerings and special gifts to give thanks. These people are very similar to the Orixá that rules them, because there is no middle ground: for them it's all or nothing.

Saturday orisha

Saturday is kept for celebrating Iemanjá, queen of the sea and mother of several other Orixás. Her children are usually people who get angry very easily in the face of jealousy and accuse others of ingratitude for their actions.

On the day of worship of this Orixá, it is recommended to wear her colors, silver and white, and make offerings to her to thank for her deeds. For this, the greeting made on the day of commemoration of Iemanjá is 'Odà ìyá!", a way to reinforce the celebration dedicated to the queen of the sea.

How to know the Orixà by your Odu

Discovering the Orixà through the Odu, which, like the signs for the Zodiac, are related to the birthday of each person, can be a way to identify the Orixà that rules you. However, the process is a little different, because unlike what happens with the signs, it is not based on the position of the stars.

In this case, it is noted through a vibration of the numerology of the day of birth of each person. In this way, there are 16 Odus of Ifá in all. And there is a way to calculate and find yours specifically, which is done based on the date of birth.

The calculation is done as follows: a person born on September 12, 1991 must add all these numbers, 1+2+0+9+1+9+1=32. In this case, the number being above 16, it must be added again, 3+2=5, and this will be the number of the Odu of this person. See which Odu your result corresponds to!

This is a way adopted by these people to keep away those who are close by out of interest and who can abuse their goodwill and helpfulness.
