The story of Saint Sarah of Kali

The history of Saint Sara de Kali is directly linked to the times of Jesus Christ. According to the legends that consolidated Sara as a saint, she would have been a slave that accompanied Jesus, from the growth until the crucifixion, being always close to the Marys and the apostles of Christ.

Sara is said to have fled Israel along with the followers of Jesus after the persecution of Christians. Below, learn who Saint Sara of Kali is, her connection to Jesus, her story on the seas before arriving in France, why the scarf is her symbol, and more!

Saint Sarah of Kali and Jesus

Like every legend, there are some variations, but the most widespread story about Sarah of Kali tells that she was one of the slave servants of the Marys who accompanied Jesus (Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacobé and Mary Salome), having also remained by the master's side until his death on the cross.

Thus, the crucifixion of Jesus made it necessary for many devotees, especially those most attached to him, to flee the territory, at the risk of being captured and killed. This is how Sara of Kali left with the other women.

The Marias' boat

During the attempt to escape from their land, Sarah of Kali and the three Marys, along with the philosopher Joseph of Arimathea (this part of the legend varies, according to sources), were captured and placed in a boat without oars, without food and without water, so that they would languish and die in the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, in despair, they all began to cry and also to pray, asking for heavenly help.

Promise of Saint Sara of Kali

It was when she was trapped inside the boat, in despair, that Saint Sara of Kali took the attitude that would forever change her history. She removed the scarf that she had tied to her hair and cried for help to the master Jesus, swearing that if everyone was saved from that situation, she would never walk with her head uncovered again, as a sign of respect and devotion. Besides, Sara also promisedspread the word of Jesus when they landed on dry land.

The boat arrives in France

The prayers and the promise that Saint Sara of Kali made to Jesus to save her had effect and the boat was carried by the waters of the sea, until arriving at the coast of France, in a small city known today as Santa Maries de La Mer (Saint Marys of the Sea), in reference exactly to this history.

The handkerchief of Saint Sara of Kali

Scarves are accessories already used by eastern cultures, such as the Egyptian and the gypsy, both associated with Saint Sara of Kali. They are called "diklô" by the gypsies and have a strong symbolism for this people.

But beyond the cultural issue, the scarf is part of the miracle of Saint Sara of Kali itself, because it was with it in hand that the Egyptian slave made the promise to save everyone on the boat. Since then, the scarves became a symbol of Saint Sara of Kali and many are offered by devotees at the shrine, which is located in the French city as a form of thanksgiving for graces achieved.

The Saint of the Roma people

The connection of Saint Sara de Kali with the gypsy people has to do with the saint's ethnic origin and also with the social issues of the time, when prejudice was even stronger than it is today. Sara was a dark-skinned and enslaved woman, so when she arrived in France, she was not welcomed by the population as the Marys were.

But there were gypsies in the city who did not think twice before receiving Sara among them. Since then, Sara of Kali lived among the gypsies, fulfilling her promise to preach the word of Jesus and to wear the scarf until the end of her days.

In this way, she would have performed some miracles among the gypsy people and, therefore, after her death, Sara of Kali was worshipped as the patron saint of the gypsy people.
