Who are the Orixás?

The Orixás are the Gods or Saints of the religions of African origin. Originally, each region or tribe revered a deity and, when they arrived in Brazil, they united their creeds and started to know a little more about the Orixás of other tribes or places. And that's how Candomblé was born in the country.

The Umbanda also reveres the Orixás and entities, born of the union of Candomblé with spiritism, shamanism and other spiritual lineages. There are differences between the Orixás of both traditions, but Oxum is present in both. Understand better who is this Yabá.

Who is Oxum?

Oxum is one of the great female Orixás - Iabás. She is sweet, sensitive and strong in her own way. She was the first Iabá to be part of the council of Orixás that discusses about humanity and the only one to succeed in ensnaring Exu, a cunning and quick-thinking Orixá - and because of this, she is also the guardian of the games of shells with this Orixá.

Lady of sweet waters, of fertility, of intuition, of pregnant women and of prosperity, she is dressed in gold and it is from this gold that the armor of Ogum, the warrior Orixá was made. Prosperity, fertility, sensuality, beauty, sensibility and spontaneity are Oxum's outstanding characteristics.

How do I know if I am a son of Oxum?

To know if you are a son of Oxum - or any other Orixá - is a long process of study and self-knowledge. So, to know if you are a son or daughter of Oxum you need to know the characteristics of this Yabá, its Itãs (legends) and especially its own characteristics. It can also be useful to consult the cowrie shells in Candomblé or mediums in Umbanda.

What are bead threads or guides?

The guias or threads of beads are ritualistic necklaces used in the traditions of the African matrix, always related to the head Orixá of the person who is using it. Usually they are made by the son de Santo with plastic beads or natural stones and are bathed and smoked with the herbs of the corresponding Orixá.

The guides are much more than props, they are a form of identity, of link with your Orixá. They show that you are an initiate, which is your head saint and how long you have been in the tradition. For example, Oxum's beads are usually yellow gold, and can be gold or amber.
